How to Add a Slot to a Figma Component

There's a third route: create the property first from Properties → + → Slot, then apply it to a frame. New to components? Start with how to create a component in Figma.

• Preferred instances: a curated list of components the slot suggests. In an instance, Add instances fills the slot from that list.
• Min and max layers: a guide for how many items belong in the slot. Figma shows a warning when the count is off, but it doesn't block the edit.

In an instance, you can put any layer into a slot: insert it directly, duplicate what's there, or drag a component in from Assets.

1. You're on an instance. Slots are set up on the main component. Go to it with ⌃⌥⌘K / Ctrl+Alt+Shift+K and convert the frame there.
2. The layer isn't a frame. Convert to slot needs a nested frame. Use Wrap in new slot for anything else.
3. You selected the top layer. A slot can't be bound to the component's top-level layer. Select a frame inside it.
4. The rollout hasn't reached you. Figma's help page lists slots on all plans, but it was released as an open beta from March 2026 and staff described it as rolling out. If Convert to slot is missing on a nested frame in a main component, the feature likely isn't on your account yet.

Figma's help center splits them by how much freedom you want. Instance swap suits rigid components where one fixed spot takes one component, such as the icon in a browser tab. Slots suit flexible areas that still need to feel consistent, such as the body of a modal used across the product. Variants handle states and types, like a button's default, hover and disabled looks.
