Why Isn't the Glass Effect or Background Blur Working in Figma?

The Glass effect and Background blur don't show on a layer whose fill is at 100% opacity. Lower the fill opacity (not the layer opacity) to something like 10–40%, and the blur behind the layer appears. Background blur needs a fill opacity between 0.10% and 99.99%.

Two more limits trip people up: you can't use Glass and Background blur on the same layer, and Glass isn't supported in SVG export or Figma Sites.

Glass or background blur not working: the causes

  1. The fill is 100% opaque. A solid fill hides everything behind it, so there's nothing to blur. Lower the fill's own opacity in the Fill section.
  2. Nothing is behind the layer. Both effects blur what sits underneath. Over a flat white frame the result looks like nothing happened. Put an image, gradient or colourful shapes behind it.
  3. Glass and Background blur are both on. Figma doesn't allow them on the same object. Keep one.
  4. You exported to SVG. Glass isn't supported in SVG export. Export PNG instead.
  5. Glass is stacked on glass. A glass layer over another glass layer doesn't factor in the one behind it. Stagger them or use Background blur on one.

How to create glassmorphism in Figma

  1. Place a colourful image or gradient on the frame.
  2. Draw a rectangle on top and give it a white fill at around 20% opacity.
  3. In the right sidebar, click + in the Effects section and add Glass, or Background blur if you want a plain frosted blur.
  4. Add a 1px white stroke at low opacity for the edge highlight, and a soft drop shadow if the card needs lift.

Layer blur and background blur both come as Uniform or Progressive. Progressive lets you set start and end size, direction and intensity, which is how you get a blur that fades out towards one edge.

How to add grain, noise or texture in Figma

You don't need a plugin for grain. The same Effects + menu has Noise and Texture.

  • Noise comes in Mono, Duo or Multi colour, with size and density controls. A layer can have up to 2 noise effects.
  • Texture has size, radius and a Clip to shape option. One per layer.

A little Mono noise on a glass card makes it read as frosted plastic rather than a flat tint. For a repeating graphic texture instead of grain, build a tile; see how to make a repeating pattern tile in Figma.

04

Effect limits per layer

Each layer can carry 8 drop shadows, 8 inner shadows, 1 layer blur, 1 background blur, 1 glass, 2 noise and 1 texture effect. To stack more than that, put the extra effects on a wrapper frame or a duplicate layer.

If a glass card needs to go into a PNG or a slide, export at 2x so the blur and noise stay crisp. The how to export from Figma guide covers scale settings.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Why is background blur not working in Figma?

The layer's fill is probably at 100% opacity. Background blur only shows when the fill opacity is between 0.10% and 99.99%, and there has to be something behind the layer to blur.

Can I use Glass and Background blur together in Figma?

No. Figma doesn't allow both on the same object. Use one, or split them across two stacked layers.

How do I add noise or grain in Figma?

Select the layer, click + in the Effects section and choose Noise. Pick Mono, Duo or Multi and set the size and density. Each layer can have up to two noise effects.

Does the Figma glass effect export to SVG?

No. Glass isn't supported in SVG export or in Figma Sites. Export PNG to keep the look.
