How to see and restore version history in Figma

To see a file's history in Figma, click the file name at the top of the canvas and choose Show Version History. The panel lists every saved version. Click one to view it, then right-click and choose Restore This Version to roll the file back.

Figma saves an autosave checkpoint every 30 minutes, and you can save your own named versions with ⌘⌥S / Ctrl+Alt+S. The Starter plan keeps 30 days of history. Paid plans keep all of it.

Quick steps

1

Open version history

Click the file name in the toolbar and choose Show Version History. The version list opens in the sidebar.

2

Preview a version

Click any version in the list. The canvas shows the file as it was at that point, without changing the current file.

3

Restore or duplicate it

Right-click the version and choose Restore This Version to roll the file back, or Duplicate to open that version as a separate file. Both need edit access.

4

Save a named version

Press Cmd+Option+S on Mac or Ctrl+Alt+S on Windows and give the version a title of up to 25 characters, so it's easy to find later.

01

What Figma saves in version history

Figma writes an autosave checkpoint every 30 minutes while a file is being edited. Those checkpoints appear in the version list next to any named versions people saved by hand. Named versions are the ones worth relying on, because you choose the moment and the title.

  • Starter plan: 30 days of version history.
  • Paid plans: the full history of the file.
02

How to create versions in Figma

Press ⌘⌥S on Mac or Ctrl+Alt+S on Windows. Figma asks for a title, which can be up to 25 characters. Save one before any change that's hard to undo: a big component refactor, replacing missing fonts across the file, or a handoff to developers.

03

How to restore a previous version

Open Show Version History, right-click the version you want and choose Restore This Version. Restoring doesn't throw anything away: Figma keeps the state you had before the restore as its own entry in history, so you can go back to it if you picked the wrong version.

If you only need a few frames from an old version, choose Duplicate instead. Figma opens that version as a separate file, and you copy what you need back into the current one without rolling back everyone else's work.

For a single mistake you just made, undo is quicker: ⌘Z / Ctrl+Z. Version history is for going back further than your undo stack, or for changes someone else made.
04

Figma restore version not working?

Restore and Duplicate both need edit access to the file. With can view access, you can look at old versions but you can't restore or duplicate them. Ask the owner for edit access (see how to change edit access in Figma) or ask an editor to restore it.

If the version you want isn't in the list, check how old it is. On the Starter plan, versions older than 30 days are gone. If the whole panel won't load or Figma is misbehaving in other ways, start with Figma not working.

05

How to undo a change in Figma

For recent changes, undo is faster than version history. Press ⌘Z on Mac or Ctrl+Z on Windows, repeatedly if you need to step back further. Redo is commonly ⇧⌘Z / Ctrl+Shift+Z (or Ctrl+Y), but Figma's help center doesn't list it, so check the shortcuts panel with Ctrl+Shift+?. If undo does nothing, the usual cause is a keyboard layout mismatch, covered in Figma shortcuts not working.

Undo steps back through your own recent actions. To get back a state from yesterday, or from before a teammate's edits, open version history and restore or duplicate from there.

06

When to save a named version

  • Before replacing missing fonts across the file, which changes it for everyone.
  • Before a large refactor of components or variables.
  • At each handoff or review, so you can point people at the exact version they saw.
  • Before transferring ownership of the file or restricting who can edit it.

Keep titles short and specific, such as Handoff v2 or Before font swap. You only get 25 characters.

07

Can you delete Figma version history?

Figma's help center doesn't document a way to delete versions from a file's history. If you need a copy of a file without its history, Save local copy writes a .fig file that leaves out version history and comments, and it reopens as a new, unlinked file. See how to save a Figma file locally.

08

Version history vs branching

Version history is a timeline of one file. Branching lets you work on a copy of the main file and merge it back when you're done. It's only on Organization and Enterprise plans and needs a Full seat. Create one from the file name menu with Create branch…. Anyone with edit access to the main file can merge, and merging archives the branch. On other plans, Duplicate from version history and a named version before big changes give you most of the same safety.
