How to Add Realistic Mock Data in Figma

Lorem ipsum tells you nothing about how a layout holds up. Real names range from Li Wu to Maria Fernanda Castillo-Rodríguez. Prices go from $4 to $12,499.00. Emails push against the edge of a table column. When every card says John Doe and Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, those problems stay hidden until a developer builds the screen with production data.

Realistic data also makes reviews go better. Stakeholders read a dashboard with plausible numbers as a product, and they stop asking what the grey text will say. In usability tests, placeholder text breaks the scenario, because participants can't act on a page that says nothing.

Lorem ipsum is still fine where content is truly unknown, such as marketing copy that hasn't been written, or very early wireframes where you want people to look at structure. Switch to realistic data once the layout is being judged.

Figma has no built-in lorem ipsum or fake data generator, but Figma AI includes Replace content in Figma Design and Figma Sites. Select one or more objects with text, choose Replace content from the Actions menu, and add a prompt for context. It works on repeated elements, filling duplicated cards with similar but varied content based on the first one.

It's a good first thing to try, especially for lists and tables. The limits are that it needs Figma AI to be on for your plan and team, it doesn't do images (Figma points you to Make image for that), and you steer it with prompts rather than picking a strict format.

For five or six cards, typing values is fine. Keep a scratch text file with a set of believable values you reuse: a few long and short names, emails on different domains, prices with and without decimals. For anything larger, the time adds up and people fall back to copy-pasting the same row, which defeats the point.

Plugins are the fastest way to fill many layers with a specific format. Pre-filled data types

The Pre-filled Data tab has more than 28 types across eight categories, and you can search or filter by category.

• Personal: full name, first and last name, email, phone, age, birthday, gender, SSN.
• Business: company, profession.
• Location: address, city, state, country, zip code, latitude, longitude.
• Internet and social: URL, IP address, Twitter handle, hashtag.
• Finance: credit card number, currency code.
• Text: lorem, sentence, paragraph.
• Design and technical: hex color, GUID.

Select the text layers, click the type, and each layer gets a different value. The values come from the Chance.js library, so they're random rather than tied to each other. The name and the email on the same card won't match, which is usually fine for mockups but worth knowing for demos.

AI Replace for anything else

When the presets don't cover it, type a short prompt like Australian phone number, startup product name, or US license plate and click Replace with AI. Every selected layer gets its own generated value. Short, specific prompts work best. The built-in key is shared and capped at 20 tokens per request, which covers short values but not paragraphs. Add your own OpenAI API key in Settings for up to 1,000 tokens; the key is stored in Figma's client storage.

Avatars and placeholder images

Select frames, not text layers, then pick one of ten styles (Realistic, Cartoon, Anime, Vector, Fantasy, Sci-Fi, Cyberpunk, Steampunk, Chibi, Minimalist) or write your own prompt. The generated image is placed as a fill inside each frame. Randomize picks a style for you.

Every change supports undo, so try a type, look at the result, and Cmd/Ctrl + Z if it's wrong. If you haven't installed a plugin before, here's how to install Figma plugins. All options are listed in the Mock Master AI docs.

• Mix in a few long values on purpose. Generators favor average lengths, and the longest realistic value is what breaks a layout.
• Leave some fields empty in at least one row to design the missing-data state.
• Test currency, dates, and phone numbers in the formats of your real markets, not just US formats.
• Check translated lengths too. German and Finnish strings often run much longer than English. The translation plugins help here.
• Don't put generated data that looks like real personal data, such as full SSNs or card numbers, in public files or Community posts without making it obviously fake.
