How DPI works in Figma exports
Figma measures designs in pixels, and it treats one design pixel as 1/72 of an inch. Scale changes how many real pixels each design pixel becomes:
- 1x = 72 DPI
- 2x = 144 DPI
- 3x = 216 DPI
- 4.17x ≈ 300 DPI
So the formula is scale = target DPI ÷ 72. For 150 DPI that's about 2.08x.
Two ways to export 300 DPI
Option 1: design at print size in points, export at 4.17x
Set the frame to the print size at 72 per inch. An A4 page (8.27 x 11.69 in) becomes a 595 x 842 frame. Add a PNG or JPG export setting and type 4.17x as the scale. The result is about 2480 x 3508 pixels, which is A4 at 300 DPI.
Option 2: set the exact pixel size
If your printer gave you pixel dimensions, skip the maths. Type the width with a w (2480w) or the height with an h (3508h) in the scale field, and Figma scales the export to fit.
Does the DPI number in the file matter?
Some print shops check the DPI value written into the image file, not just the pixel count. Figma's help center doesn't say what DPI value it writes into exported files, so if your printer asks for 300 DPI metadata, open the export in an image editor and set it there without resampling. The pixels stay the same.
Figma export for print: PDF and CMYK
PDF and SVG exports are 1x only. Vector content in them stays sharp at any size, so the scale limit mostly matters for photos. Colour profile options are Same as file, sRGB and Display P3, with no CMYK. If your print job needs CMYK, bleed or crop marks, a print plugin is the practical route.
