How to Import a PDF into Figma

No. Figma's help center lists the file types the file browser imports: Figma, FigJam, Slides, Buzz, Sites and Make files, Sketch files, PNG and JPG images, and PowerPoint (.pptx). PDF isn't on the list. The nearest workaround without a plugin is to save each PDF page as a PNG or JPG in another app (Preview on Mac can do this) and drag the images in, which gives you a flat picture of each page.

• Editable layers turn text into text layers, shapes and icons into vectors, and photos into image fills. Pick this when you want to redesign a document, reuse its copy, or pull out a logo. Expect some cleanup: text often arrives as many small text boxes, and groups rarely match how the original was built.
• Images place each page as one flat image. Pick this for reference, markup, a background to trace over, or a printer's template. It's faster, keeps the look exactly, and on pdf.to.design it isn't limited on the free plan.

Scanned PDFs are pictures of paper with no text or vectors inside, so an editable import has nothing to convert. Treat them as images.

• pdf.to.design by divRIOTS (about 245,000 users): editable layers or images, page stacking options, font replacement and password-protected files. Its listing says PDFs are converted on your machine and never uploaded. The free plan gives 5 editable imports, first 3 pages only, and unlimited image imports; the paid divRIOTS ONE plan removes the limits and adds batch imports.
• PDF to Figma (about 337,000 users): free, images only, one image per page up to 4080 × 4080 px. Its last update was in 2022.
• Codia AI PDF (about 57,000 users): free, uses AI to rebuild PDF pages as editable layers and can export back to PDF. It runs in Figma Design and FigJam, not Slides.
• Convertify (about 539,000 users): imports PDF along with Illustrator, InDesign, XD and PSD files. Worth it if you also move files between Adobe apps and Figma. Free tier plus paid Pro.

pdf.to.design places every page as a separate frame and lets you stack them vertically (best for reading a document top to bottom), horizontally (best for decks) or in a grid (best for seeing a whole brochure at once). On the free plan, editable imports stop after page 3, so for a long document either import as images or split out the pages you need to edit first. PDF to Figma also creates one image per page.

pdf.to.design and PDF to Figma both list Figma Slides among the editors they run in, so you can run them from inside a deck. If you'd rather import in Figma Design first, you can move the frames over with Copy to Figma Slides in the right sidebar. That button only appears for top-level frames with an aspect ratio between 4:3 and 16:9, so pages from a slide-shaped PDF qualify but portrait A4 or Letter pages don't.

If the PDF was exported from PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Slides, ask for the original deck. Figma Slides imports .pptx files from the file browser on any plan, and the slides stay editable. Google Slides to Figma walks through that route, and Figma to PowerPoint covers going back the other way.

2. Text split into fragments. PDFs store text as positioned runs, not paragraphs. Select the pieces of a paragraph, retype or paste the copy into one text box, and delete the rest.
3. Content missing or clipped. Complex masks, transparency groups and embedded forms don't always convert. Import that page again as an image and trace or rebuild the missing piece.
4. File is huge or slow. Large photos come in at full size. Import only the pages you need, and clear Figma's cache if the file slows the app down afterwards.
