"Export from Figma to InDesign" is one of the longer threads on Figma's forum, at around 26k views and 37 replies. The short answer there hasn't changed: there's no direct export, so you pick a route by how much editing InDesign needs to do.
Quick steps
Add a PDF export to each frame
Select a frame, click + in the Export section of the right sidebar and set the format to PDF. Repeat for every page you need.
Export the frames
Use File > Export (⇧⌘E / Ctrl+Shift+E) to export them all at once.
Place the PDF in InDesign
In InDesign, choose File > Place and pick the PDF. Turn on the import options if you need to choose a page.
Check colour and resolution
Figma exports RGB only. Convert to CMYK in InDesign or Acrobat, or with a print plugin, if the printer asks for it.
PDF, SVG or IDML: which should you use?
- PDF for finished pages. Everything lands in InDesign as one placed graphic per page. Crisp at any size, but you can't edit the text in InDesign.
- SVG for logos, icons and illustrations you drop into an InDesign layout. InDesign places SVG files directly.
- IDML when an InDesign user has to keep editing the layout. Only a plugin can create it.
How to export an editable IDML file from Figma
Convertify (about 519,000 users) exports selected Figma pages and frames to a zipped InDesign package. Inside is the .idml file and a Links folder with your images at full resolution. - Hidden layers come along. They arrive as hidden objects in InDesign unless you turn on the option to remove them from the export. Delete anything private before you share the file.
- Images look soft. Switch InDesign's display performance to High Quality Display. The linked images are full resolution.
- Fonts must be installed. InDesign needs the same fonts on the machine that opens the file.
The forum thread also mentions MkitF2I, a plugin on the InDesign side that imports Figma files. Check that it supports your InDesign version before you rely on it.
Figma PDF shows as a white box in InDesign
This comes up on the forum with no confirmed cause. Community replies point at how the frames are set up rather than at InDesign. Try these in order:
- Export one frame on its own and place it. If that works, the problem is in the frames that fail.
- Look for masks and clipped content in the failing frames. Flatten or simplify them and export again.
- Open the PDF in Acrobat or Illustrator. If it looks right there, place it again in InDesign with the import options on and check the crop setting.
Print tips for a Figma to InDesign handoff
- Colour. Figma exports sRGB or Display P3, never CMYK. Let InDesign or Acrobat handle the conversion, or use Printery to export a CMYK PDF with bleed and crop marks from Figma.
- Selectable text. If the text in the PDF needs to stay searchable, MKitFPdf exports frames with text as real text.
- Photos. Figma scales placed images down to 4096 px on the longest side. For large print jobs, place the original photos in InDesign rather than using the ones from Figma.
